Painting by Stephen Mopope (1898-1974) who was one of the "Kiowa Five" artists who achieved international recognition during the late 1920's -1930's under the direction of Oscar Jacobson at the University of Oklahoma. Their style was characterized by flat, 2 dimensional figures against a neutral background and was a progression from traditional hide painting and also ledger art.
