Provenance Chair was given to donor's grandmother Mrs. Tom (Nancy) Christian by her mother at the time the family moved from Georgia to Texas in the 1870s. After Nancy married Tom Christian, they moved to Waurika area, c. 1890. Donor remembers being told that a former slave who wished to remain with the family came with them to Texas and with the Christian family to Oklahoma. This was her (the slave's) chair and was usually kept by the hearth. Donor indicates chair is probably 125 years old.
